black light
Black light is when an image is taken, usually in black and white, and the light and contrast is turned up. The light seemingly turns up the white in an image but it also turns up the black in an image also and the contrast makes the lines between the black and the white more clear, creating this look to an image that makes the main focus/subjects of the image black and makes the rest white. I think that these images are very interesting and different, they play around with conventions and your eyes try and makes an image out of them but its difficult as they have been abstracted to a large extent.
Keld Helmer-Petersen
Keld Helmer-Petersen made a book in which he called 'Black Light' which contained photograms in which he displayed images of blacked out subjects that were simply one shade of black and nothing else, these were made using photograms, this was because this book was published in a time before photoshop was invented. Now when we make similar images we can use photoshop to manipulate the images instead of using photograms.
first black light photoshoot
Our first task in photography was to take a photoshoot of images that would be later manipulated and edited in photoshop. I decided to take my first black light photoshoot in black and white as I felt that it was the most fitting way to take them.
The way that I took the images differently was changed by the fact that they were taken with a black and white filter, images taken in black and white will be taken differently from the way that coloured images are taken, this is due to many factors but one being that the style is different, the images taken in black and white are different to images taken in colour, this is why it was strange as I never actually use monochrome filters.
The end result of these images is that the whole class is going to change them in photoshop and make them look almost completely different so again to try and make the images compatible with what we are doing to them in photoshop I had to take the images in a certain way, in terms of framing they are all very similar and would defiantly work with what we are doing in photoshop.
